The next time you are with someone sporting diamond
jewellery, do not be surprised if you discover that the diamonds
come from Botswana. These precious gems brought Botswana to the
status of being one of Africa’s richest nations due to the discovery
and mining of diamonds in the last decade or so. The Jwaneng diamond
mine is ranked among the world’s richest, producing 9 million carats
annually. The country also mines copper-nickel. The climate and
soils also favour large-scale ranching. Cattle ranching is Botswana’s
second largest industry and processed beef is exported to the European
Community.

| One of course cannot ignore the other large money earner for the country – tourism. This industry is still relatively new and is always undergoing development and change. Although the wilderness areas of the country are vast, they are also environmentally fragile; official policy is to generate a high cost/low volume approach to tourism. Generally, Botswana is an expensive tourist destination on the whole but in many instances, it is not excessively so. There are affordable opportunities for all visitors. Generally speaking, the more developed the tourism areas (in the Okavango Delta, for example), the more they will hurt your purse. In the less developed areas, where there are fewer infrastructures, the more remote will be the area and which in turn will mean no amenities whatsoever. But this can offer the traveller a relatively inexpensive place to visit. The end result, of being in a timeless zone away from any impact of the modern world of course, is ultimately priceless. |
